Backlink Watch - One of my favorite link building tools. It’s a very simple way to check a website’s backlink URL’s, anchor text and total OBL’s (outbound links) on the same page as that link.

Quick Tip – If a website is ranking for a particular keyword, you can punch that site into backlink watch, and skim the outputs for all anchor text links saying that particular keyword to get a good idea of what type of sites and which sites are giving them links saying their/your desired terms.

Analyze Backlinks - Another gold mind for exploring a competitor’s backlinks. This one provides more valuable options that allow you to filter out same domain URL’s and to search for factors such as target keyword mentions surrounding the links.

Quick Tip – Same as the tip for Backlink Watch, but add the factor of looking for that keyword on the page as well. Because surrounding content of links can sometimes be just a valuable as the link itself.

Yahoo Site Explorer – Not really a link building tool, but you could quickly check a site’s backlink count and it’s top 10-1000 backlinks. Although this tool isn’t much more better than the previous 2, it does show the title of the linking pages and allows you to track you own websites if signed in and verified ownership of site.

Quick Tip – Export top 1,000 results to CSV/TSV. Open it in a spreadsheet and filter based on keywords in Titles and URL’s.

Google Search (link:yoursite.com) – No different than the one above except for the fact that the number of backlinks according to Google’s search engine is ALWAYS considerably lower than Yahoo!’s results. But the links that made it to Google’s results are assumingly affecting the search rankings

Alexa Backlink Checker – You can see total domains linking to a website and which domains they are.

Quick Tip – Alexa offers tremendous data far beyond which domains link to you.

Bad Neighborhood Text Link Tool – Great way to see what type of links a website accumulates, whether it be yours or a potential link partner.

Quick Tip – If a potential partner wants to exchange links with you, check and see if all their backlinks are legit. Because, yes, guilty by association is a search engine ranking factor.

SoloSEO Link Search Tool – Quite possibly the easiest way online to find relevant backlinks that are fairly easy to obtain.

SEO for FireFox Plugin – Besides being able to provide you with on-demand access to data of the top ranking site’s instantly, the SEO for Firefox tool also provides a great feature that highlights nofollow links (in red), so it’s easy to identify which  links count and which don’t.

Quick Tip - Keep it on at all times. You may see the net differently when all nofollow links are highlighted red.

Google Webmaster Tools – Besides getting the best perspective of your website through the eyes of Google, the Google Webmaster Tools also tells you the links they’ve found, and their anchor text.

Quick Tips – Make sure all your top linked pages are live and optimized.

Link Harvester – I put this one toward the end of the list because it provides the type of data far beyond what the basic link builder needs. Nonetheless, it’s a oldie, but goodie.

Quick Tip – Record all the edu & gov links and make an effort to actually get a link from them.

Search Combination Tool – Not a link building too at all. But with the  tips provided below, you can make it another SoloSEO Link Search Tool (above).

Quick Tip – Instead of just your keywords, use your keywords in combination with words like resources, “favorite sites”, link partners, directory, etc.

Recip Links – A tool that spiders a site (or list of sites) and check to see if they are linking to a specified domain.

Quick Tip – Export all your external links, copy and paste them into the recip tool and see which sites don’t link back to you.

Link Appeal Tool -  Is a link from your website really worth it? Find out with this tool how valuable your website is based on several factors.

Quick Tip – Aim to get links from sites with higher value than yours.

Most companies with a web presence do not make much money online. Instead, they make their money through word of mouth or print or television advertising. A lot of companies do not spend the time and effort on Search Engine Optimization. There are many reasons for this. One reason is because they do not have the time and money to spend on SEO work. The second reason, in many cases, is because they have paid a Search Engine Optimization company only to get little or no results.

I will teach you just some of the steps to a successful Search Engine Optimization strategy. One thing to always remember, organic SEO takes time. Google can rank you within a week for an easy keyphrase or many months for a tougher keyword but once you are ranked number 1 it should be smooth sailing and all you really need to worry about is maintaining your position.

Ok, so where exactly should you start? Let’s say you own a car wash company in Houston, Texas. What some SEO companies will do is target the key phrase “car wash.” That is the wrong way to to do keyword research because the term is too broad. Even if somehow you ranked on page one for the term “car wash” then you are still competing with 49 other states that are searching for that term. Once they click on your site and see that you are located in Houston they will click away. Regardless, the term is so competitive that you may never rank for that key phrase to begin with.

Instead it would be beneficial to you to try to rank for a local keyphrase. An example would be “Houston car wash”. Keyword research should take up the bulk of your time when it comes to SEO. Scope out the competition and see what they’re doing. Check to see who links to their sites and see if you could request that those sites link back to you. The reason you want sites linking back to you is because Google also looks at backlinks in determining how important your site is. Each link to your site is considered a vote in Google’s eyes, especially backlinks from reputable websites.

One of the main things to work on is your actual page content. Try to use text and not images for your navigation. Also, try not to use too much javascript. While your page should look appealing, also try to keep your source code as clean as possible. This is why I recommend tabless CSS. Tabless CSS is much cleaner than if you had your site built with tables. Most important when optimizing your website is to have a lot of relevant content and to update your site once in a while, maybe once a month or once every couple of months.

There are many other factors that will help get you ranked higher on Google. These are just some of the most important and basic factors. Once you master these then you can research some more and get more advanced.

Although link building can be a tedious task that can be extremely difficult for some people, it can also be fun for other people. However one thing is for sure, you have to be in the link building mind-set. Either you’re in the mindset 24/7 and are always ready to obtain your next link whenever the opportunity arises or you have to set 3 hours aside to get in the zone to build as many links possible.

It’s best to have both mindsets. Always look for an opportunity to get links. But also recognize that to obtain truly relevant links, it’s necessary to set a special time aside to do so. After all, strategic link building is crucial to any SEO campaign competing in a tough industry, it well worth the time.

I recommend you spend some time creating a list of URL’s of pages you could possible get your link on. Create this list in a spreadsheet document such as Excel so you can add columns and perform tasks such as sort and filter.

Once you have a spreadsheet ready, here are a few ways to create a list of relevant possibilities…

• Determine who your competition is and perform a link: search. [ie: link:jameseo.com] Export all results to csv. Then find all the sites linking to sites “related” (Google’s related) to your competition.
• Manually visit the top 100 sites for your top 2 – 10 targeted terms and see which ones are directories, blogs or have link (resources) pages.
• Use special search operators such as intitle:Keyword Phrase “add link”, inurl:directory intitle:keyword, intitle:keyword inurl:resources, etc.

These 3 techniques should help you create a nice size list. The size of the list normally depends on the competition. I aim to find at least 1,000 sites. This list will increase along the way. There are a variety of link building tools to help you generate even longer list of URL’s.

So, now that you have a huge list of URL’s you have to set a few hours aside to manually go through this list. Depending on what stats you have on each URL, the order you go in is up to you.

Because the list was generated by analyzing relevant sites, no matter how much time you spend on it, it will help your rankings (assuming onpage SEO is intact).

After you visit all the sites on your list or just need to take a break from THE LIST. Here are a few other ways to get more relevant backlinks;

• Contact other webmasters and let them know about your site. These webmasters should be websites in your industry with a lot of visitors
• Notify forums. Every industry has forums. Letting visitors that participate in these forums know about your site can generate buzz.
• Find blogs in your industry with huge RSS subscribers. Ask them to review your site. Normally all their visitors/commentators will review your site as well.
• Convert all your text content to podcast using text to voice software (Or you can record someone reading it). Then submit your podcast to podcast directories.
• Do the same with PDF’s and ebooks by simply adding table of contents and converting the file type to a PDF. Then you can submit them to free ebook and PDF directories in return for links.
• Write a press release. Your website can get picked up by a major site with high PageRank. Helping rankings or sending traffic your way.

Once you’ve performed these techniques and you’re still not on top, it is recommend you find long term, passive link building strategies like creating badges or pictures for people to add to their site. [ie: page counters with backlinks, Wordpress blog theme footer links, etc.]
